Plantation Punch

The Plantation Punch is related to the Planter’s Punch.  Just as their is no hard and fast rule on the Planter’s Punch neither is their one on the Plantation Punch.  The only place there is agreement is that a Plantation punch will have both rum and Southern Comfort.  I went with lemon and lime juice in this recipe because of the name Plantation.  Now there are plantations in South America, Caribbean, Central America and of course in the southern states of the U.S., but very few plantations here would have had orange trees but most would have had lemons and limes around the main house.  With that in mind I chose to experiment with just lemons and limes for this recipe.

Ingredients

1 1/2 oz heavy rum  (Gosling’s Black Seal)

1 1/2 oz Southern Comfort

3/4 oz lime juice

1/2 oz lemon juice

1/4 oz simple syrup

3 Dashes of Angostura bitters

Club Soda

Garnish

Lemon and lime wedges

Glassware

12 oz tumbler

Assembly

Fill a shaker with crushed ice.  Measure lime and lemon juice, syrup, bitters, rum and Southern Comfort and add to shaker.  Shake until cold and pour the entire contents into the glass.  Top with club soda.  Garnish.

Suggestions

You can find recipes with club soda, with pineapple juice, with lemon juice and of course grenadine.  Whatever you experiment with just dedicate yourself to using quality ingredients.  If it is summertime get some fresh peach puree.
